Melissa hit a home run with this image. Great contrasting emotion captured and it works perfectly in black and white.

Ed Huang has developed such a keen eye in such a short time. His images are very impressive. Ed consistently makes women look like goddesses. Wow.

I'm not usually into animal/pet images but these by 'thetomer' are outstanding. They are simple, yet so rich in colour and character. It's like a great portrait but the subject are animals.

This is Leah Bradley. She was one of the fabulous models I recruited for the recent Toronto Strobist Group event. She's quite interesting, visually and personally. I see an intriguing soul in her. Perhaps I will discover her more in the future.

Chelsea - environmental shot, originally uploaded by ~~~James~~~.

It pays to be aware of what's going on around the set, not just in front of the studio strobes. Sometimes environmental shots using ambient can add a different dimension.

Such a cool photo from a talented young photographer. Very creative.

The adrenalin

The adrenalin, originally uploaded by Miss Aniela.

This is a fine example of "floating" or "levitation" images. It involves multiple exposures using a tripod and using layer masks to remove unwanted details in the photos - like someone holding your legs up.

Austin Fashion

What a great photo. Love the tones. Love the simplicity. The lighting is so good that she appears to be floating on her own. The background perfectly complements the subject. Now I need to go learn how I can do this:)

Wow. This photo says so much. Why is this pretty girl walking down this dark alley and why has she stopped? Who are the strange shadow figures in front of her? Is she is danger?

Simple shot but the expression and lighting is perfect. It is almost Rembrandt lighting but not quite. The graffiti background works really well with this. Kudos to the photographer for understanding simplicity of lighting.

Homeward Bound, originally uploaded by ~~~James~~~.

I drive a fair distance every day to and from work, and usually the sun has gone down or is going down when I reach home. So I thought I might as well take some pictures while I'm commuting (safely of course - I don't take take my eyes off the road). Toronto does have some beautiful sunsets.

10 day toe-zees!, originally uploaded by cathy {M} photography.

This is just so cute. I've seen this type of photo many times but never with twins .. so cool. Have you heard of the octoplets that were born in the States recently? Now that would make a cool baby feet picture!!

Tuesday, January 27, 2009

, originally uploaded by Jose Torralba.

So why did I choose this photo to blog about today? From a strobist perspective it is missing a hair light, it doesn't have good separation from the background, the hair is blending into the darkness, the skin is too pale, her shoulders are too square ... blah blah blah. You know what I see? I see beauty. Not just the beauty of a woman but the beauty of a photographer who knew enough to ignore the photographic portait standards and go with what "feels right". And you know what -- it sure damn works!! Bravo for not conforming.

Smoke | Runner

Smoke | Runner, originally uploaded by Suyog Gaidhani.

There's something about these smoke photos that appeal to me. It's a very simple technique --> look to your right for a link --> and yet they are so beautiful. I especially like the ones that take on human form, either intentionally or unintentionally. Perhaps it's the idea of what I call "essence minimalism" - the act of capturing or portraying the "ti esti" - 'the what it is' , using the least amount of elements.

So the question follows - how many elements of this photo would you have to remove for it to lose the essence of human form?

Yes, I know, I think about the weirdest things ... smile.

In the darkness I play

hmm .. don't know what to say about this photo. My thinking was to create a low key, high contrast photo of Anthony (DJ) that captured his 'essence' - hopefully that makes some sense.

Unspoken stories

You can tell a lot about a person's life by looking at his/her hands. Hands can show so much character, not unlike a person's face. This photo is so simple, yet so powerful and telling.

Classic Wedding Band in Book - 2

On a whim I did this photo using an led flashlight, an old book and my wedding band. The hardest part was keeping the wedding band from falling over. It must have fallen over a couple dozen times - it's like placing a penny on it's edge but 10 times harder. Glad that's over.

The page(s) I arbitrarily chose are quite inappropriate, yet entirely accidental I assure you - take a closer look and you will see what I mean.
